Group Classes for Individuals with Visual Impairments
These particular group classes are designed specifically for individuals who have limited vision or who are blind. It should also be noted that individuals with visual impairments are welcome to enroll in (link) Individual classes and receive one to one instruction. The group classes for people with visual impairments are designed to be part of specialized programs, such as summer camps for school-aged students, parts of summer special education programs, classes at rehabilitation centers, or educational programs sponsored by clubs or organizations. They can be as short as one day or as long as a week and they are ideally designed for groups of 10 students. However, slightly larger groups can be accommodated with the addition of a second instructor. All tools, stone, and carving materials will be furnished. At the completion of the class, students will:
- Identify the common carving hand tools
- identify and select carving stones
- Clean a rough stone
- Cut out a basic form from a cleaned stone
- Shape the cut out form into the desired figure
- Finish the surface of the shaped stone
- Complete a piece
- Describe the work arounds that make it possible to carve with limited or no vision.
