The Inukshuk (pronounced inooksook), is much like the Native American totem, but is a traditional icon of Arctic people. It is a type of cairn, made by stacking individual rocks into a human-like form. Like the totem, it has strong spiritual qualities, especially when you are viewing it as a lonely sentinel on the crest of some tundra rise, hundreds of miles from the nearest man made object or sound. Like its surroundings, it is a simple, but emotionally moving thing.
